Definition
下山 is a separable verb (离不词) meaning 'to go down a mountain'. The 山 can be separated from 下 by a measure word, duration, or other element, e.g., 下了山 (descended the mountain). It also has an astronomical sense for the sun or moon setting below the horizon. A rare literary sense refers to a woman losing her husband, but that is not common in modern usage.
