Definition
上面 (shàng miàn) means 'on top of' or 'above' in physical space, and also 'above-mentioned' in a text. It is more specific than 上 (shàng), which can mean 'above' but also 'up' or 'on' in a general sense. For 'in front' use 前面 (qián miàn), not 上面.
