Definition
上税 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to pay taxes'. It is used similarly to 交税 but often for mandatory tax payments. The verb can split: 上 carries tense markers and objects while 税 remains as the object. For example, 上了税 'paid the tax' or 上了一次税 'paid taxes once'. Note: the input pinyin 'shǎng' is a contracted form; when the word is split, each character is pronounced separately as shàng and shuì.
