Definition
上宾 literally means 'upper guest' and refers to a person who is treated with the highest respect at an event — a guest of honor. In classical Chinese, it was also a euphemism for the death of an emperor (皇帝上宾). The modern use is almost exclusively the 'distinguished guest' sense, often in formal or ceremonial contexts. Note that the pinyin in the source data is incorrect; the standard reading is shàngbīn.
