Definition
丈母娘 refers specifically to one's wife's mother, not the husband's mother. English uses 'mother-in-law' for both sides, but in Chinese you must distinguish: 婆婆 (pópo) is the husband's mother, and 丈母娘 (zhàngmǔniáng) is the wife's mother. Using the wrong term can cause confusion in family contexts.
